## The Big Decision
Fifth wheels and travel trailers are the most popular towable RV categories  and for good reason. Both offer tremendous value, flexibility, and comfort. But choosing between them can feel overwhelming.
This guide breaks it down simply.
## Towing Requirements
**Travel Trailers** hitch to a standard receiver hitch and can be towed by most trucks and many SUVs. A half-ton truck handles trailers up to about 8,500 lbs GVWR comfortably.
**Fifth Wheels** require a fifth-wheel hitch in a truck bed. You'll need a 3/4-ton or 1-ton pickup for most models. The upside? Far superior towing stability  the king pin connection reduces sway dramatically.
**Verdict:** Travel trailer if you already own a capable half-ton. Fifth wheel if you have or plan to buy a heavy-duty truck.
## Interior Space
Fifth wheels win on space per dollar in most cases. The raised front bi-level design creates a private bedroom suite elevated above the living area. Four or five slides are common, delivering 400+ sq ft of living space.
Travel trailers are catching up. Modern floorplans with two or three slides deliver excellent space at lower price points.
## Price Comparison
| Category | Entry Level | Mid-Range | Luxury |
|----------|-------------|-----------|--------|
| Travel Trailer | $22,000 | $38,000 | $60,000+ |
| Fifth Wheel | $45,000 | $72,000 | $120,000+ |
